IEC hosts an annual conference and other events that include discussions of important topics related to compliance with US federal laws for those institutions participating in federal loan programs. Attendees learn about issues such as the US financial audit requirements, the return of Title IV funds, best practices from student loan program experts, and hear about the latest developments in Washington as Congress considers and the US Department of Education implements changes to federal student loan programs - changes that affect IEC members.
These events are also great opportunities to learn more about the U.S. student loan programs and the goals and activities of the International Education Council. In addition, IEC staff are often invited to speak at events hosted by entities with similar interests and issues.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The International Education Council is pleased to announce a workshop to discuss issues pertinent to administrators of the US Student Loan Programs for American students enrolled at colleges and universities outside of the USA.
This conference will feature important information on the proposed changes to the US Stafford and PLUS loan programs, the administration of the U.S. Federal Direct Loan Program, and current regulatory and legislative issues specific to non-U.S. schools accepting U.S. federal student loans.
Sessions will be presented by:
- Betsy Mayotte of American Student Assistance, a foremost expert on the loan laws and their complex regulations and procedures. Her session will cover many of the regulatory changes introduced over the last year.
- IEC Executive Director Harrison Wadsworth will present on the many recent and pending changes in the laws governing the loan programs, including how the political situation will affect the student loan programs.
- Erich McElroy of Educational Services Management will provide information on exchanging data with the U.S. Department of Education via the Student Aid Internet Gateway.
At the workshop we will discuss President Barack Obama's proposal to replace the guaranteed student loan program with Direct Loans for all schools.
The Direct Loan program relies on an existing system used by American institutions, but is currently not available to institutions outside of the United States.
Officials at the U.S. Department of Education have said they are aware of this issue, and plan to work with the U.S. Congress and the affected schools to reach a solution. The U.S. Congress is expected to consider President Obama's proposal this spring, and additional details will be provided at the workshop.
The workshop will provide a great opportunity to discuss the impact of these major developments. Sign up today and share this information with your colleagues!
